Creative Critical Reflection: "The Lazy Song" Music Video

When my partner and I did our research we looked at the original music video, covers, parodies, and dance covers to the song. We noticed that in most videos people copied certain parts of the original music video such as a group of people wearing costumes such as a plaid long sleeve shirt with sweatpants, monkey masks, and sunglasses. Some videos had snuggies or pajamas, and the setting of these videos would usually be in a bedroom or living room space. We also noticed that in that people did some synchronized dancing such as move their head from side to side but most people copied the dance moves and movements from the original video. As part of our rubric for this music video, we were supposed to tell a story through our music video. Since these common conventions did not really show or tell a story we just made our own twist. We did attempt to include some of the common conventions in our music video. Such as doing some type of synchronized dancing, and we wore pajamas or comfortable clothing. Kendia wore plaid pajama pants which is similar to the plaid flannel shirts they wore but I did not have one so I wore the pajama pants I had. We also did include a part with us going under a tower of raise hands. There was also a scene where people put their hands in their pants we just put our hands in our pockets.

Through our music video, we wanted to tell the story of how we don't feel like doing any work. Just take a day to sleep, watch t.v. and not do any school work. I think these actions do engage our audiences. Any person can relate to feeling lazy and just wanting to take a break. People can relate to the fact that there are times we don't feel like talking to someone or not doing any schoolwork or work in general. We may also procrastinate on any given task. Since this is a music video we did do a little dancing. In getting our commercial distributed, it was posted on Kendia's youtube channel. I could not post it on my channel since we were having trouble sending it to my email. People can also view the commercial on my blogger page with the blog titled "The Lazy Song Music Video Cover".

I did develop some production skills through this project. Since I had a partner, I did learn some stuff from her. For example, when recording our establishing shot Kendia taught me how to include transitions as we film rather than using a transition from the app. In the editing process, I did learn some new things. Through the VSDC editing app, I learned how to crop videos instead of trimming them prior to dumping them on the app. Prior to doing this project, I learned in my commercial project how to add background music. This time I did not think it would be easy to find a place to download the actual song but we did find many sites that allowed us to download different versions of the song.  I think one interesting skill I developed is creating a credits scene. This was my first time doing this so I had to do some research on Google. I learned how to create rolling credits but because we did not want our video to go over a minute, I just took a screenshot of the credits page.

For the researching stage, my partner and I looked at Youtube videos of "The Lazy Song" music covers, parodies, and music videos. As we watched these videos we were able to pick up on some common conventions used in the majority of videos. For the filming process, we originally used my phone but then used my sister's phone since she had better video quality. In the editing stage, we originally used Clipchamp because the app looked simple so it made editing our commercials easy. As we edited using the Clipchamp app, we came across an issue. The issue was that whenever we played the music video, certain clips would slow down and you would only hear the music playing. As a result, we decided to use the VSDC editing app. To download the audio to the song we used the website called "mp3juices". I then had to use Google to figure out how to create a credits page and to see what a credits page should include. We wanted to create a scene that had credits to acknowledge the people that helped us in making the video and those who were in it. I used PowerPoint to create the credits and to create the "Thanks for Watching" slides. I also had to use google images to find GIFs that said: "Thank You for Watching". After creating those slides through the PowerPoint app, I then used a screen recording app called "Screen Recorder Pro" to screen record the "Thank you for watching" slide.
