Title Research: (Bird Box)
We watched the opening to the film on Netflix. The opening sequence shows a high angle shot of the woods. We can see there is fog and a lake. There is no action going on so it feels quiet. In the background, we hear a man who appears to be talking over the radio. At some points he sounds as if he gets cut off but is able to get back on to ask questions or say something. Then the setting shows the camera going over the lake and at the center the title to the film slowly appears on the screen. Then there is a closeup shot of the mother giving commands to her two children. By the way she was speaking you can tell she was being very serious and was trying to show to her kids that they better listen or they will all be in danger. The camera films the characters packing their stuff Then the camera follows them as they get out from the house blindfolded and they follow the trail using a rope. When they get to the bottom of the hill near the lake, the mother uncovers the canoe and puts her children into it. Then she pushed it into the lake and started rowing. Not many titles were displayed except for the name of the film. In the opening scene it prioritizes images such as the mom speaking to her children, family packing, them struggling to walk down the path blindfolded, and the woods appearing lifeless. These images demonstrate that something has happened and the family is trying to get to a safe place. The opening establishes the feeling of a thriller because in the opening with woods it appears quiet because there is no movement going on. You also hear the background noise which gives off this feeling that something is out to get them. Also how the mother was speaking to the children makes you feel like what she is saying is important in trying to keep them alive. All together it makes us viewers feel what could be out there that they need to be blindfolded for and have to run away from. The editing techniques of certain actions between shots are being cut off as they are trying to get on the lake. For example, one moment you see the mother pushing the canoe and in the next shot she already has one child already put into the boat as she is trying to put the son down. It gives off the feeling that everything is happening quickly and that they are rushing to get out of there. It makes us anticipate what is going to happen to them and we think this is what this opening scene does a good job in.
