Title Research: (Intruders)

Image
We watched the opening title sequence on Youtube. The first thing we saw was a person’s eyes closed, then it quickly opened. As this happens the pupil of the person’s eye shatters into pieces and then a red spot appears. Next, there is a shot with a person standing on the edge, near to the ocean. The shot then jumps to a shot being taken at the high angle of a stairwell. The shot transitions to a person's hands and their palm looks as if there are cuts. Soon after we see a gravestone, a distant city and the shattered faces of people. 1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? It displayed the names of the cast, those who were behind the film process, and the title name. The title was in the color white over a black screen  2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? We saw images such as an statue of an angel/gravestone, the eyes of a person, stairwells, shattered hands and faces of people. 3. What connotations do these images carry? Through these image...

Title Research: (Us)

Image
We viewed the opening on Youtube. In the opening credits, the letters or words are in the color red. It was somewhat hard to read some of the words, maybe it could have been due to us watching it on Youtube or the low lighting. The scene shows a closeup shot of a white rabbit in a cage. The camera then starts to zoom out and viewers could see a large amount of white or black rabbits in cages. For the background music it sounded like a choir of women then joined by a group of men. In the music, we heard instruments such as drums and a triangle being hit. The images mainly being prioritized are the rabbits in cages. Our eyes were still focused on the rabbit in the center since the words were also in the center of the video. This opening created a creepy feeling because to us viewers we wonder why there are so many rabbits being trapped in cages. The cages are also held in a room with multiple rows of desks. The background music also added to the feeling because we could not understand wh...

Title Research: (Ava)

Image
We were able to watch the opening to this on Netflix. The opening sequence shows a computer screen with images of people who are mainly men with red x’s crossed over their faces. The movie title “Ava” then glitches or twitch onto the screen. The opening scene takes us on a journey of Ava’s life. We see images of her mom, sister and a shot of young Ava running around. We could tell she was athletic because some shots showed her fencing, doing gymnastics, karate, and archery. We also see closeups of grade reports or a yearbook that showed she was a straight A student, Valedictorian, and had many awards. We saw a wrecked car and newspaper reading that two people died in a DUI car accident caused by an honor student. From this we assumed she may have been the person driving under the influence which led to people dying. We then see multiple shots of Ava training in the military. It then displayed images of files that describe Ava being dishonorably discharged, guns, needles, medical review...

Title Research: (Bird Box)

Image
We watched the opening to the film on Netflix. The opening sequence shows a high angle shot of the woods. We can see there is fog and a lake. There is no action going on so it feels quiet. In the background, we hear a man who appears to be talking over the radio. At some points he sounds as if he gets cut off but is able to get back on to ask questions or say something. Then the setting shows the camera going over the lake and at the center the title to the film slowly appears on the screen. Then there is a closeup shot of the mother giving commands to her two children. By the way she was speaking you can tell she was being very serious and was trying to show to her kids that they better listen or they will all be in danger. The camera films the characters packing their stuff Then the camera follows them as they get out from the house blindfolded and they follow the trail using a rope. When they get to the bottom of the hill near the lake, the mother uncovers the canoe and puts her chi...

Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

Image
The purpose of us exploring the site is to learn a little more about title sequences.  After looking into these two sites, we notice how through our research it would benefit when we create our titles and design them for our opening sequence. Once you're on the site, there is a title sequence tab. Once you click on it, it organizes title sequences into categories: feature film, tv shows, event titles, student projects, video games, french fridays. Compared to the other site you are able to see the sequences be organized so you can tell the difference based on what type the film is. It was interesting to see that there are student projects and videos. The site also shows films that are popular, less popular and from all around the world. This site is not so different from the “Art of Titles” website. Both the sites show title sequences, designers, and studios. The “Art of the Titles” includes articles that are written by editors from the site whereas in this one we did not find any....

Title Research: Art of the Title Website

Image
Through this site, it provides basic information about a movie or show. In the pages that we have seen it would include 9 slides of the title sequence. It would then have below the title sequence information about it such as: the studio or designer behind the title sequence, release date, styles, and country and language the film is in. There is also a short bio or summary on the film. On this site, we were able to find a long list of designers. Once we clicked on a designer’s name we could see information about what studios they worked for, a short biography about their work history and film projects they have done. As we explored the website, I looked at an article on “The Birds of Prey: And the Fabtabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn”. This article was different from other articles about films or tv shows. This article had a transcript of the interview with the Creative Director and Lead Animator. From this interview we were able to see how usually those working on a title sequ...

Genre Research: Us

Image
The movie Us is a horror and thriller film. It is about a woman and her family who returns to a beachfront house from her childhood. Having a traumatic experience here in her childhood, the main character Adelaide feels as if something bad is going to happen. Despite her wishing nothing would go wrong, her feeling was true. One day mask strangers came into their house and this forced them into survival mode. As if all odds were not already against them, it turns out the four mask strangers were doppelgangers of each member of the family. As the movie plays on the family is on the run from the doppelgangers and the doppelgangers are killing anyone they want to. One family the doppelgangers killed was Adelaide and her family's longtime friends.  Elements in this film that I would use for my final task are anxiety, anticipation, and suspense. The plot twist is something I would have also used if the film was longer than the opening scene. The anxiety watching this show gave me, made m...

Genre Research: Birdbox

Image
The movie bird box incorporates many genres alongside thriller. The genre of horror as fear is inflicted in the viewers as we do not know what the creature is. Drama as there is a lot of tension in the film. Scientific fiction as the creatures in the movie are made up and not real. As well as Apocalyptic as the world is under lockdown and fighting for its survival. This movie is also very suspenseful and keeps you on your toes, hence, the reason for it being a thriller. An element of a thriller that I saw in this movie that I will be using in my opening scene is suspense. Then suspense in this movie kept me on my toes. With each passing scene, I kept on wondering if they would make it out alive. Especially when the undercover guy that was staying with them, tried to make them all see the creature. Or when the woman killed herself after I thought that she was going to make it. The element of provoking anxiety is another element that I also would like to use. This element correlate...

Genre Research: Ava

Image
The movie Ava delves into many genres. Thriller, Crime, Action, Mystery, and Drama are all of them to be exact. However, we are mainly focusing on the thriller scope of this movie as it relates to the genre we are using for our opening scene. The movie Ava is about a woman who was an alcoholic and is recovering from being an addict. After a fight with her mom, she joins the military to be a soldier. She then becomes an assassin after being discharged due to questioning authority, etc. As if history has repeated itself, once again she begins to question authority and the way things are done in her assassin organization and starts to break protocols. This leads to a hit being put on her by the leader of her organization and she is wanted dead. Viewers then are watching her survive in the fight against her organization as she is fleeing and fighting. An element that I choose to base my opening scene that this movie has is suspense. During the movie, at first, no one knows why she is being...

Genre Decision Blog

Image
For our opening scene, my partner and I have decided to make it based on the genre of thriller. As of right now, we are not 100% if we are going to do a thriller. This is because we have two other genres that are similar but different. Another genre that we had in mind to do is horror. The other genre we have is a crime. The reason we have crime as a genre we might do is because when discussing, we wanted to do an opening scene that involves a kidnapping approach. At first, we thought that this would be a thriller as most characters are often snatched or killed in thriller movies. However, after doing research we found that kidnaping would fall under the genre of crime. We also thought of doing horror because we had believed that horror was very calculating and suspenseful. On the contrary, after our research, it turns out that thriller is more suspenseful and calculating or rather psychological. Hence, we think that doing our opening scene in a thriller would be the right choice...

Genre Research: Thriller and Drama

In the genre of a thriller, many things add to how a thriller film will come out. The angles, camera movement, Mise en scenes, etc. The most used lighting in thriller films is low-key lighting. It adds an ominous and mysterious feeling. The common angles used in a thriller are low and high. High angles make a character seem small or inferior. Low angles make a character seem big and powerful. Mise en scenes typically used in thriller movies are darker tone makeup as it sets a dark mood or props that help to build suspense. Elements often included in thrillers are suspense, anxiety, or excitement. This helps to bring viewers to the edge and draw their attention to the film more. Likewise, in the genre of drama, many things add to how the drama film will play out. The lighting, angle, and camera movements all add their spice of flavor. The most common lighting in the genre is high key lighting and three-point lighting. They both add to the mood changes during the film. Common angle...

Genre Research: Action

Earlier this year, I had to create a PowerPoint on a genre of my choice. We were also given the choice to work with a partner for this project. Hence, for this project, I worked with my best friend. I talk to her every day and we are in the same class, so this was the best option. When picking our genre, we chose “action” as this is the type of genre we seem to watch a lot in the past year in movies and shows. When doing our research we watched and looked at trusted websites to acquire knowledge of what methods or materials are used to produce action movies. We researched what lightings are used in action movies. We also researched the angles that are used in action movies. We also researched the camera movements, mise en scenes, and sounds involved/used in action movies. From the information we obtained, some common lighting in the genre of action is low-key lighting and backlighting. Low-key lighting emphasizes dark tones and shadows and creates an ominous and suspenseful mood....

Our Pitch

Image
For our pitch, we were not sure at first what genre we wanted to do our opening scene in. After discussing it over and over we decided that doing our opening scene in the horror/crime genre would be the best way to go for us. This is because horror has a lot of suspense that draws the viewers in. It will also leave you wanting to know what happens next or what is happening in the scene. The sense of confusion but suspense draws you in and makes you continue watching as you are waiting for the big reveal that will make you understand it all. Hence, we believe that this genre will be the best for our two-minute opening scene as viewers will want to know what’s happening next. For our first pitch, it would be “Girl at home gets kidnapped by a mysterious stranger when she opens the door.” For this pitch, we were thinking about a girl just relaxing at home and going about her normal day. Then at night, there is a knock at her door but she was not expecting anyone at this late hour. When she...

Starting the final task

Image
Hi, my name is Melissa Meme, and welcome😊. These new set of blogs will document my partner and I's journey as we work on this final task. Last time, I worked on a music video before the winter break. In this new project, we are to create an opening scene for a movie. This time I would be introducing myself all over again. I am currently an 11th grader who is attending Fort Lauderdale High School. I am a Haitian American who is somewhat fluent in Haitian Creole. I am plan in the future to work in the medical field. So far I enjoy this class and love that I am learning all about films and the process. I choose to work with my best friend Kendia Banks. We partnered up for all media group projects together last year so it made sense to work with each other again for the final task. We are best friends and I work well with her so it was good to know we can group with those we knew. Seeing this is our final task we can then push each other to get work done. I also choose her because the...
